9 Things You Can Do to Be Happy in the Next 30 Minutes
Surprising ways to instantly improve your mood.by Gretchen Rubin

Being happier doesn't have to be a long-term ambition. You can start right now. In the next 30 minutes, tackle as many of the following suggestions as possible. Not only will these tasks themselves increase your happiness, but the mere fact that you've achieved some concrete goals will boost your mood.

1. Raise your activity level to pump up your energy. If you're on the phone, stand up and pace. Take the stairs instead of the elevator. Put more energy into your voice. Take a brisk 10-minute walk. Even better...

2. Take a walk outside. Research suggests that light stimulates brain chemicals that improve mood. For an extra boost, get your sunlight first thing in the morning.

3. Reach out. Send an e-mail to a friend you haven't seen in a while, or reach out to someone new. Having close bonds with other people is one of the most important keys to happiness. When you act in a friendly way, not only will others feel more friendly toward you, but you'll also strengthen your feelings of friendliness for other people.

4. Rid yourself of a nagging task. Deal with that insurance problem, purchase something you need, or make that long-postponed appointment with the dentist. Crossing an irksome chore off your to-do list will give you a rush of elation.

5. Create a more serene environment. Outer order contributes to inner peace, so spend some time organizing bills and tackling the piles in the kitchen. A large stack of little tasks can feel overwhelming, but often just a few minutes of work can make a sizable dent. Set the timer for 10 minutes and see what you can do.

6. Do a good deed. Introduce two people by e-mail, take a minute to pass along useful information, or deliver some gratifying praise. In fact, you can also...

7. Save someone's life. Sign up to be an organ donor, and remember to tell your family about your decision. Do good, feel good―it really works!

8. Act happy. Fake it 'til you feel it. Research shows that even an artificially induced smile boosts your mood. And if you're smiling, other people will perceive you as being friendlier and more approachable.

9. Learn something new. Think of a subject that you wish you knew more about and spend 15 minutes on the Internet reading about it, or go to a bookstore and buy a book about it. But be honest! Pick a topic that really interests you, not something you think you "should" or "need to" learn about.

Brown Sugar Cookie Sandwiches

Oh boy, you need to make this dessert immediately! I made them for our small group and they sure were a big hit!

Brown Sugar Cookie Sandwiches

Ingredients

1/2 cup unsalted butter

1 cup dark brown sugar

1 large egg

2 teaspoons vanilla extract

1 cup all-purpose flour

1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon

1/2 teaspoon ground ginger

1/4 teaspoon soda

1/4 teaspoon baking powder

1/4 teaspoon table salt

3 tablespoons granulated sugar

1 to 2 pints butter pecan ice cream

Directions

- Preheat the oven to 350 degrees F. and adjust the oven rack to middle. Line a sheet tray with parchment.
- Melt the butter to a large skillet over medium heat. Cook until the butter is golden brown. Remove the butter to a large bowl to cool.
- Once cool, add the brown sugar and stir until smooth. Stir in the egg and vanilla, mixing until well combined.
- In another medium bowl, whisk together the flour, cinnamon, ground ginger, baking soda, baking powder, and salt. Add the dry mixture to the butter mixture and stir until well incorporated and smooth, about 1 minute.
- Add the granulated sugar to a plate. Divide the dough into 12 equal-sized balls and roll them in the sugar. Arrange the dough on the parchment paper lined sheet tray at least 2 inches apart. Bake for 10 to 12 minutes.
- Cool the cookies on the sheet tray for 5 minutes, then transfer to a cooling rack for another 10 minutes.
- Turn 6 cookies face up on the counter. Scoop 1/2 cup of ice cream on cookies and using an offset spatula, spread evenly to the edges. Top the ice cream with a second cookie and press down to adhere. Freeze until solid, about 2 hours.

Currently Reading

You might have noticed that I've added a little box for my current reading selection. I am rally trying hard to read more and would love to write some book reviews for you as well.

Last week I finished reading Redeeming Love by Francine Rivers and I've been trying to write a review for a few days. I am still in awe by amazing this book was and want my review to be every bit as special as Francine's eloquent novel.

Has anyone read Redeeming Love? If so, I'd love to hear what you thought about it. I would love to include your thoughts in my upcoming review.

I'm currently reading Sweetwater Run by Jan Watson and will write a bit about it when I finish.

To Get Me Through the Day

Lead me by your truth and teach me, for you are the God who saves me. All day long I put my hope in you. - Psalm 25:5

Time with the Girls

source
Kyle and I have been getting more involved in our church and we are loving the things God is doing in our hearts as we connect with Jesus' people.

One way that we've been getting more involved is by helping with our new campus ministry. A few weeks ago, the students introduced college women's and college men's bible studies, and said that the women's was still looking for a place to meet. Since Kyle has late class Tuesday nights so we offered our apartment.

Last week we met and the women spent the first 10 minutes meandering through our hall coordinator apartment, amazed that we didn't live in a dorm room. They were so sweet and told me how cozy our home was...I sure to do entertaining

We had tea and spent time in the word of God.

The Lord is my light and my salvation- whom shall I fear?
The Lord is the stronghold of my life- of whom shall I be afraid?..
One thing I ask of the Lord, this is what I seek: that I may dwell in the house of the Lord.
Psalm 27: 1, 4

I love seeing Jesus through the eye's of college students. In some ways I have so much to share with them, yet in many ways, I just sit and listen and realize how much I have to learn.

Wait for the Lord; be strong and take heart and wait for the Lord. Psalm 27:14

A Heck of a Day

What a day, what a day, what a day.

I did not have a good day. I've been angry, overwhelmed, frustrated, and I cried at least once.

A high (and a low) was the refugee puppy that's been living with one of my residents. I don't think I have to tell you that puppies in the residence hall are not quite allowed.

At 10:30pm, I'm finally calling it a day, and you know how I'm celebrating the end of one heck of a day....with a glass of wine!

Ok, so my glass of wine wasn't quite like this. It was more like a glass of  the Walmart special (the bottle was $3.97...don't judge...we're on a a budge!).

Speaking of wine, here's a pretty picture to cap off the evening.

Fall Rosette Wreath

If you're like me, then you love all things fall. You love hot apple cider, cozy sweaters, and chilly nights perfect for snuggling.

Here's a super easy fall wreath tutorial that will get you in the autumn spirit!

First, gather your supplies.

You will need a wreath form (dollar store!), two colors of fall fabric, glue gun, glue sticks, scissors, and acorns (or any kind of natural elements...pine cones would be pretty, too).

Choose one color to wrap around the wreath form, cut out strips of fabric (mine were about 3 inches wide) and go to town. Use hot glue to attach the fabric strips.

Set your wreath base aside and start making rosettes. There's lots of ways to do this, so feel free to customize. This is what I did.

I wanted most of my rosettes to be orange with a few baby yellow ones. I cut out long, thick strips (about 2-3 inches) of orange fabric and a couple little strips of yellow fabric.

To make rosettes, tie a knot at the end of the strip, start wrapping and twisting the fabric around the knot, and glue as you go along. It's very simple once you get the hang out it.

So make a rosette. And then make lots more.

I made large orange rosettes, small orange rosettes, and baby yellow rosettes. The size depends more on the thickness of your fabric than on the length.

Now that you have your acorns and rosettes, it's time to assemble your wreath. There is no real science here. I just arranged things so it looked pretty. I'm a fan of off-set flowers, but you could fill the entire wreath with rosettes if you wanted, or you could just use a few. I used hot glue to secure all my elements.

I used stamps and a simple key tag to add a little something special.

Happy fall!!
