"I've learned the most radical thing I can do is to be kind."
In 1 Corinthians, Paul says that above all gifts (speaking in tongues, healing, teaching), there is still a more excellent [radical] way.
And that way is love and kindness.
As I was sitting in church listening to these words, something came over me. I was so inspired, so moved. Is it really this simple?
"If I speak in the tongues of men and of angels, but have not love, I am only a resounding gong or a clanging cymbal."
In 1 Corinthians 13, Paul states that without love, our words are empty and meaningless. Love seems like such an easy piece of the puzzle, but without it, we lack so much.
"If I have the gift of prophecy and can fathom all mysteries and all knowledge, and if I have a faith that can move mountains, but have not love, I am nothing. If I give all I possess to the poor and surrender my body to the flames, but have not love, I gain nothing."
Nothing? Nothing? What a strong word. Nothing.
I have read this verse time and time again and really have not let it all sink in. Without love, I am nothing. Without love, I give nothing. Without love, I gain nothing.
Maybe kindness is pretty radical after all.
Kindness is radical living.
It is going the distance with people
giving hope to someone who is difficult
having manners
not bringing up others wrongs
not keeping score
promoting others
putting others first
being patient when it's really really hard
forgiving others when it's even harder
Kindness is
patient
happy with what it has
humble
slow to anger
Kindness delights in truth
Kindness always trusts
hopes
survives
Our pastor gave us a challenge: to be kind [to one person, cause, thing, whatever] for 90 days.
He asked us to reflect and intentionally chose one area to focus all of the kindness we can muster. Once we complete 90 days, maybe another 90, and then 90 days after that, and then who knows. You might just be a bit more radical!
I am up for the challenge AND I WANT YOU TO JOIN ME!
I'd love for you to take the challenge too and see what happens!
Want to see what a radical life you can live?
- Pray and reflect and chose one area that you will devote kindness toward for 90 days.
- Write a blog post letting others know you are up for the challenge.
- Link it up on my blog. You can find the link under the "kindness challenge" page. I will be featuring folks throughout the challenge.
- Add the kindness challenge button to your blog.
- Encourage others to take the challenge.
-Don't have a blog? E-mail me your kindness plan to iamalongfortheride@gmail.com!

"Do not be overcome by evil, but overcome evil by goodness."
Romans 12:21
Here's to a radical, life-changing, kindness-filled 90 days!

I love this idea, Laura. Just a thought. The passage you quote is beautiful. In the KJV, kindness is translated as charity. In that more archaic terminology it means the "pure love of Christ". I believe that is the highest form of love and goodness. It's something to pray for, to practice and seek all our lives.
ReplyDeleteI'm going to join your kindness challenge and will write a post about it over the next couple of days and will link to you once it is up. I really want to write the right words. Your challenge actually came at the time I've been thinking of something similar which I'll also talk about in my post. I'll be praying that you have many MANY people taking your challenge on.
ReplyDeleteBlessings,
Nancy

ReplyDeleteHi Laura,
ReplyDeleteSo nice to have you visit my blog today, I've been a follower here for a while and enjoy your blog. This year I have been trying to show kindness to shop assistants, I am very task oriented when out and about and just a tad impatient, but I have been making an effort to extend a little grace and kindness (not on my own of course!). It is amazing the interactions I have had when I have taken the time to smile or strike up conversation. These are real people with real stories and real families and heartaches and I have been so blessed by just being willing to take a minute here and there to reach out and show kindness. So maybe my challenge will be to do that all the time, not just some of the time. I'll try remember to post about this...
Go girl!!
Tracey
Wonderful challenge and perfect for me at this point in my life! Will be back to link up to my posting and will grab the button!!!

ReplyDeleteWell, if you've been at my blog, ever, you'll know that I'm with you already on this.
ReplyDeletewhen in the mind of 'oneness' with all people, kindness is kinda ... normal.

Oh wow. This post is exactly what God wanted me to read tonight! I was just thinking about how I can possibly make a difference in this world full of poverty and injustice and I was feeling so inadequate. But it really is as simple as loving kindness. And committing to one thing at a time sounds so doable! I really want to do this! I'll get a post up hopefully sometime next week!!
ReplyDeleteWhat an awesome challenge! I love it! So glad you linked up today on my W&P post! What a better way to worship the Lord than through kindness to others! I am totally up for this challenge! I need to pray and see where the Lord would want me to focus my kindness!!
ReplyDeleteHappy Sunday!
Jen
Kindness. I'm all for it. I'm going to try and focus.
ReplyDeleteAwesome. I'm in. What a great idea. Such a simple thing, but with huge rewards. Thanks so much for posting. Here is my post:

ReplyDeleteHi Laura,
ReplyDeleteI've been sooo busy, I haven't had time to come and visit. I saw this challenge banner on your blog and now that I know what it's about, I'm really impressed. I've always felt that my kindness was my biggest asset. I love this challenge, you always have such great messages. I remember when you shared with us about the single mother who didn't have a place to live and at the end of the day, not only was she offered shelter but she also had your services to decorate her home. You are such a fantastic person and I'm so glad I know you through blogging. I'll try to make some time this weekend to read some of the linked posts for this challenge. It will be so inspiring. God Bless.
Oh Laura I love this! I'm super late too, but I would love to participate. I love what you said, and can't wait to write a post of my own about kindness. Thank you for your inspirational words and thoughts! I just keep liking you more and more! :)
ReplyDeleteI needed this. Thanks! I'll have to get on board with you!
